The great fairytales fulfill many roles, none more so than transporting us a world full of strange settings and fantastical sights; but it’s important to remember that the world around us can be just as wondrous and in some cases, even more so – with that in mind, let’s take a look at 10 real-life locations that appear as if they’ve stepped straight out of a fairytale…
N.B. While it seems hard to believe at points, all these photos/places are ACTUALLY real!
10. Le Mont-Saint-Michel
Where: Normandy, France
Le Mont-Saint-Michel (Saint Michael’s Mount) is an island, village and castle located roughly one kilometre (0.6 miles) off the country’s northwestern coast and has a population of 40 people.
Having held strategic fortifications since ancient times, its unique position 600 meters from land made it practically impossible to invade throughout history – recognizing the location’s natural benefits, Louis XI would eventually turn the Mount into a prison.
One of France’s most magical landmarks, it attracts more than 3 million visitors a year.
WOW: Disney used the Mount as its inspiration for the castle in Tangled (2010).
